The green beans I planted this year ...

Post by Inkflo on Fri Aug 30, 2013 4:34 pm

flower I used to plant the old English runner beans, (I never have been keen on haricots vert)
and last winter, I regularly bought those coco plait green beans from Grand Frais.
So this year, I decided to plant the french equivalent which were Vilmorin Haricot mange tout Roma and Vilmorin haricot mange tout Mistica.
They have been such a success that I won't be planting anything else in future.
They were fast to germinate straight from the soil, not a lot of foliage which makes them easy to see and pick, and they have produced lots of
full flavoured, almost stringless beans all summer. In fact, they are still flowering and cropping well now.
So, if like me, you're not a huge fan of the small haricots vert, you may want to try these.flower

I like haricot vert, but OH is lukewarm about them, so there is always a problem when it's harvest time as there are too many. I've found they don't freeze that well, so I'm wondering why I bother with them!

A couple of years ago we had a wonderful harvest of runner beans, but again OH likes them in small doses.

Perhaps it's time to change O.H.!Twisted Evil

When you say 'the french equivalent' do they also require a frame to climb up?

They do, exactly like the runner beans, but not so rampant!

The thing is Amber, you can leave them to grow quite long and they aren't tough & stringy, so no need to harvest them
as often. I planted 15 this year, and we haven't had a glut, just a steady crop that's fed us well since July.
The nights are getting colder, so I don't know how long they'll carry on cropping, but at the moment, they are still flowering
and producing beans.
