The French Dog club is holding the 90th Nuvic Dog show this weekend 21/22 september 2013. We belive the show will be signed from the N89 and with a good weather report should be a good day out for dog lovers.

Hi Chris & Sue - you must have read my thoughts. I've been poorly sick and so haven't been out to look for posters etc, but, I was going to post something to ask if anyone knew where it was exactly and also any timings would be useful (is it all day?) So - does anyone have more details which would help please? Thanks. Karen.

I'm a bit of a worrier and I think it was a case of being mentally exhausted (from sorting out my headlights, controle technique, not to mention Tim's PhD thesis deadline) coupled with working in the garden and all sorts of stuff before the weather turns.......and we've only been here since June. However, this morning I got up feeling a bit better but not well enough to trek to Neuvic so decided to see what the day might bring. Glad we didn't go out as we ended up chatting to some french bloke who just came wandering around the hamlet. Turned out he knew lots of people within the vicinity and we really enjoyed his company. Then our neighbour came along with his dog this evening and I dragged him in the garden seeking advice on which mushrooms we should pick and eat.......I am, of course, writing this after we have eaten them so if we're not seen for a while can someone come and knock on the door and check we are OK ! Only joking ! I think !..................oh, and I was starting to feel much better ! K.

Glad to hear that ,our french neighbours in the other hamlet where we used to live were brill ,but this hamlet a bit based on paris people are very differant ,if you were sick i think you could lay here dead for months before anyone queried it   used to live in 87 ,but find life in 23 very differant  glad you check with your french neighbours about the mushrooms ,lots of bad ones as our neighbours in 87 showed us ,love ceps but never find them ,smell them yes ,but find the little buggers no  stay healthy  

There are still no cêpes about, or girolles for that matter, but there are suddenly a lot of coulemelles, which are lovely dipped in beaten egg and breadcrumbs (chapelure) and fried in the pan. This is what they look like: http://coulemelle.lepiote.free.fr/.

Only eat the coulemelles if they are widely open, ie. flat, not when they are not open yet, they are supposed to be toxic. If in doubt, you can always go to the pharmacy to get your mushrooms checked out if you're not sure you about them.

Not the same mushroom situation everywhere... hardy anything around me except a few coulemelles but a friend near Aubusson has collected over 8kg and the last two weeks (weighs the find each time) mostly chanterelle, peid de mouton and ceps.. including two or three real beauties.

We live at the same altitude with very similar weather and temperature, so why not here??? I live in hope...... sorry Myriam

@TonyH: My response was as a guidance to Blakevine, who has moved in June to a place not far from me and as there are only coulemelles about in this location, I thought I would make them aware of what is there at the moment. Did not express myself clearly.

Why the sorry?

Myriam.. the 'sorry' was just that it felt like rubbing your nose in it, saying that someone else was finding large amounts of mushrooms when you were not finding much.

Just posted for info to show that it is still worth looking even though others are not finding many mushrooms.

So thats why simmo's running round on the roof when he eats the little coulermelles. We had them on garlic rubbed, butter toasted bread last night with a salad and they where yummy!. Cepes we keep tripping over the damed things in our woods,some as big as dinner plates!.Girolles we also have by the bucket load too.When we walk the dogs we carry baskets with us.

Well, thanks Myriam, Tony, Simmo and all. Just to let you know that we survived the mushrooms. I probably should have said that the elderly french gentleman who gave me the mushroom advice is our neighbour and is around 87 with very few teeth and a very local accent - bit of a miracle that I understood what he said (at least I think I did) and yet here we are! The ones we ate were indeed Coulemelles - I can say that with confidence as we have bought a beautiful book by Benoit Peyre which takes you through the months of the year telling you in beautiful photographic form and text what mushrooms you should expect and how to pick them. I shall, of course, consult our local pharmacy if I'm unsure........K.

I find it best to stick to a few varieties of mushrooms that you know really well... for which you have no doubt whatsoever. If you find something else that you think might be OK, then pick one and research it thoroughly... and give them to your neighbours to try first.

Don't forget you can take them to your local pharmacy for identification , we have taken quite a few but all were inedible, I will keep looking though.. one day I may find some other than the field mushrooms  

Simmo ,you -------- we have lived in 3 houses in 87 and 23 all with big gardens and woods and never any cepes  i adore cepes but last year even the markets in my area did not have any !but i wont give in and will keep looking
