Bathroom UK v France Empty Bathroom UK v France

Post by Ultrarunning Sun Jan 05, 2014 8:18 am

I would be interested to learn of people's experiences in installing a new bathroom in France. I have heard some people suggest that buying new in UK and shipping out to France is substantially cheaper. However I have also heard that France use different size fittings and this could cause a problem, although I would presume that there are reducers available when joining UK to French? I know people that have done both.

We bought an ex display kitchen sink including nice taps for only
£20 so decided to take a chance. It went in with a few modifications
carried out by our fitter plus many swear words.

Get the reducers before taking over your UK bought items, if there
are such things (probably are).

I would think UK prices are far lower in price

Best of luck and let us know.

Hi.
As much as you can get deals in the UK, you can in france as well. It really depends on what you want to fit. If you want cheap and cheerful, I would go for french suite.
However, I have fitted for 2 customers suites from the  UK, quite well known bathroom specialists. They both wanted 'something special' which was either unavailable, or very expensive in france.
There are no problems with fittings on most things, but I would strongly suggest you use french pipe and waste. They are different sizes to uk, so if you need repairs in the future, it becomes difficult. There is a plastic pipe system in france that is fantastic, so dont be fooled into thinking you have to bring UK 15mm copper.
Have a look at this site for price comparisons

http://www.bricodepot.fr/chateauroux/     and scroll along the black line to salle de bains and plomberie.

Dont forget to add the cost of half a van load of gear from the uk to france, and possible labour increases if there are problems, breakages, bits missing etc. Maybe youre doing the work yourself.

If you need any advice, happy to have a chat on the phone, PM me your landline number in the uk, and ill call one evening.

Good luck

Everything Pogo says.

Regarding 15mm copper, just do not bring it, it will not fit or conform to French sizes. As mentioned, French waste pipe & fittings can be of a different size to the UK, even if they both say 32 or 40mm, they will invariably not fit together, one will be ID the other OD. Tap connections are usually measured in BSP in both France & the UK, so no probs there, usually. As Pogo suggests use plastic pipe (PER or MultiCouche), you can make one run from the manifold to tap without any joints, so less chance of leaks.

I agree with Pogo.
You can get good deals here, it's just a matter of watching & waiting.
Here's a previous promo on ultra modern suites in France .. http://fr.bathrooms.com/bathroom-suites/ranges

The other advantage of plastic piping is the acidity of the water, which will invariably "eat away" your copper piping and leave marks in the shower, wash hand basin, etc.

Our shower room was fitted out with everything from http://www.bricodepot.fr/ at CHATEAUROUX (hour and a half drive for us). I'm pretty confident that the prices would not have been cheaper in the UK and that it is all compatible with French plumbing.

We did have a problem with the shower mixer tap and thought it was a mistake to buy a cheap one for 40 odd euros. However went to our local Bricomarche expecting to pay much more. Surprise, surprise bought one for half the previous price. It was a straight 5 minute swap job and has been working fine for years ever since.
