Heated towel rail connexions
I have today fixed an electric heated towel rail at my sister-in-laws home. She wanted a temporary connexion via a plug before having the house rewired. However, when I came to put the plug onto the flex from the towel rail I found a confusing wiring system. One wire is black and has a label saying it is the pilot wire and the other two are brown and grey. What coluors are the live, neutral and earth?

DO NOT CONNECT THE BLACK WIRE TO ANYTHING IN THE PLUG. The brown is LIVE, the grey (or washed out blue) is the NEUTRAL. There is no earth if the device is a double insulated appliance (a diagram of a square within a square).

Thanks Le-Dolly. I'll connect it tomorrow.

Re: Heated towel rail connexions
When the house is rewired, run a single 1.5mm Black wire from the fuse board to the point that the towel rail is to be connected (along with the other usual suspects). This will allow a timer or controller to operate the towel rail remotely. This would also apply to any other electric heating solutions. The cost is initially negligible, compared with trying to upgrade at a later stage.
