Chateau de La Cazine Empty Chateau de La Cazine

For a special treat: this restaurant received its first Michelin star in February, and Michelin stars are a rare thing in Limousin! The chateau is English owned but the chef is French.

The atmosphere is very relaxed, no dressing up and children are welcome, but the service is impeccable. There are set menus at €45 and €60, so it's the sort of place which you would save up for a special celebration. The food is nouvelle cuisine-ish, the sort that you would see in the finals of Masterchef.

We had tartare of coquilles St Jacques, followed by pigeon cooked 2 ways, which was delicious. Desert was fruit-filled ravioli or meringue baskets with brandy cream, also lovely. Although it is expensive, I would rather eat one beautifully and skilfully prepared meal here than three poorly produced meals at the sort of restaurants where most of the ingredients have gone straight from the can or the freezer to the microwave.

The chateau is just outside the village of Noth, near La Souterraine.
