Still scamming!

Post by peirol on Tue Sep 02, 2014 1:42 pm

This week I have had 3 phone calls from the same scamming outfit. I thought this scam had run it's course but apparently it's still alive and well in Limousin. Disturbingly, the caller knew my husband's name, but then we are not ex-directory, so that wouldn't be too hard!

It is the one where they claim to be from Microsoft, and tell you that your computer has a fault, but they can correct it remotely if you give them various details. What they do, of course, is use the info to access your computer and track your bank details, take money from your accounts, steal your identity, etc.

Scams are becoming so sophisticated nowadays, even my IT-savvy son fell for one which purported to be from BT asking for his broadband details to upgrade his email account. It was a very convincing email, and had all the normal links to the official BT website, the only unofficial part was the IP address which came up if you followed the 'click here' link; the address was BiT.com rather than BT.com. Easy to miss if you are tired or busy.

Anyway, I told the telephone scammer what I thought of them (waste of time but it made me feel better), then I just thought, they would only do it if it sometimes worked, so it's important to warn other people to be vigilant. This kind of attempted theft is essentially no different to being mugged in the street, or having a pickpocket take your wallet.

We too have had 3 calls from these people, all of them with Indian accents.

We always answer our calls in English as the only ones we get from French folk are cold calls selling stuff we don't want, and generally they go away when they hear English.   So, what do these pain-in-the-backside people purporting to be from Microsoft do if you answer in French (as it's our French number they call on)?  Are they multi-lingual p-I-t-b's?

Mrs Two's mother (85yo) had one and gave them her bank details, luckily we managed to stop anything happening but it was close to her account being cleared out.

Banks and internet providers do not send mails or telephone you requesting details. Simple! Never give any information to strangers.

My current favourite way of dealing with scammers goes like this:

I allow them speak for a few minutes and let them think I'm interested by saying things like "ah really?" when they tell me how helpful they're going to be. I then stop them mid-sentence and say "Can I just ask you a quick question?" They usually say "yes" so I then say something like "Does your mother know that you earn a living my harassing and scamming people? Is she proud of you?".

Sometime though I just tell them to eff off.

In both cases they tend to hang up pretty quickly.

Once you realise who they are ,use a referee's whistle. You will find your number is on their black list and no more calls and if they do whistle again lol!
