Fertiliser Empty Fertiliser

Post by Alpen Fri Mar 13, 2015 12:58 pm

I am seeking a recommendation for the equivalent of Growmore fertiliser. Looking to start planting potatoes this weekend and in need of some.

I have plenty of well rotted donkey manure if you are interested.

I have found that Algoflash is by far the best all purpose fertilizer around.
I buy it in big bags from Cora, or our local agri merchant. It goes a very long way as it's in granular form and you have to use it sparingly, but each Spring, I scatter it all over the garden, lawns, veg plots, bushes and the results have been excellent.

I would put some rubber gloves on when you're scattering it, if you have a cut, it stings like the devil!

Like Amber I go for horse or donkey manure, as do the locals.

Amber: Thanks for the offer of some donkey manure but it is the wrong time of year to dig into the veg beds. I should have done it last autumn.

Inkflo: Bought a 20 kilo bag of Algoflash from our local Gamm Vert. It was €27.95 although I'm sure it would be cheaper in other places. Obviously popular as it was still on a pallet, not on the shelves.

I will never use farm manure again. We had a fly infestation after the eggs that were in there hatched, and it was a miserable summer! Sad

Inkflo: I have never heard of that problem with manure before but it is worth knowing about. I usually dig in compost from the garden to improve the soil but I don't have any this year.

Might have been unlucky with that load, but I'm not going to take the chance again! Fertiliser I-hate-flies-smiley-emoticon
