Winter Fuel Payment - Petition

Post by Richard T on Fri Jan 02, 2015 11:18 am

A petition regarding the proposed withdrawal of the WTP for expats in France has just been been started on the UK government's e-petition web site at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/73297

You may wish to share this link with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, email or, indeed, any of the huge number of people who don't read this forum.

I'm sure I've signed a similar thing over a year ago - is this a new one?

Hi Amber

You may be thinking of this:
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/52121 which closed last June. It was a lot broader than just France and received nearly 17,000 signatures. Unfortunately, in my view, the petition was badly worded in that the justification seemed to be the originator's "belief" that withdrawal of the WFP was "unjust" and rather than demand specific action it merely "asked" the government to reconsider its position. The official response was, not surprisingly, suitably bland.

The petition linked to in my earlier post is specifically about mainland France where the UK government has manipulatively defined the borders of France to include a number of tropical islands so that the average temperature of France is made to look significantly higher than you might be used to experiencing in the Limousin.

It currently has only 73 signatures and clearly needs a lot lot more, but when I looked at it this morning it had only 1 signature. It seems to be going the rounds on other expat sites.

Thanks Richard - I knew about the calculations, very convenient and typical isn't it? Like comparing Apples with Pears! Have signed.

I just noticed it now has nearly a thousand signatures. Not bad in 4 days!

We have both signed. If you receive "Connexion" you will see on p.25 some details of a Parliamentary process to try to annul the statutory instrument in question. This can also be supported by emailing your UK MP. If you haven't got one, you might want to consider registering to vote in the General Election - dead easy now at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote, you just need your passport number. No good if you've lived here more than 15 years of course!

Just to follow up Blakevine's post, I have emailed my MP as follows (well, an edited version!):

"I am registered to vote in your constituency, having lived there for many years before moving to France. I wonder if you would be able to support me in protesting about the withdrawal of the Winter Fuel Payment from UK citizens who live in France. I believe that there is a prayer to annul the SI which sets out the new regulations and would be grateful if you would consider signing the EDM 695 introduced by Roger Gale MP, in order to trigger a debate on the subject. The deadline, I believe, is February 9th and at least 5 other MPs have already signed. The winters here (the Limousin region) can be very severe and without the WFP we will have to cut back on our heating bills somehow. The new regulations are grossly unfair, failing to distinguish between mainland Franc and France’s overseas, tropical departments! The argument that France defines itself by including these departments is specious, as the French government also distinguishes between “Metropolitan France” and “France DROM” (departments and regions “outre mer”) for administrative purposes. Surely it would be simple to amend the SI to take this into account? Anyway, I hope that you have some sympathy for our cause and can offer some support, even if it is only to ensure that the issue is debated openly.
[previous address, present address]"

Plus some other details about why I need it and how the government is going to be made to look dishonest even to those who have no sympathy for ex-pats!
