I do not watch much on the TV, but, you can guess that when I want to, there is a clash of programmes. Tonight sees the start of "Indian Summers" 10 part drama and also "The Casual Vacancy" 3 part drama. Both start at 9pm English time with the latter on BBC for 1 hour and the other on Channel 4 from 9pm to 10h45. If I watched Casual Vacancy from 10-11 and then watched Indian Summers on Channel 4+1 I would have to stay up until 12h45 which is way past my bed time.

So, can someone tell me EXACTLY what it is you have to buy to be able to record your TV programmes, ie like the Virgin Plus box we used to have in Angleterre. I'm guessing that whatever it is, it would replace our Sky box which is currently the facilitator for providing us with English TV........I want to be able to record, pause, rewind etc and ultimately delete once viewed!

many thanks.

All we can tell you is what we have/do.
We have the UK's freesat, with the decoder (a Humax, said to be the best) having a hard disc for recording. The dish has a four head receiver, two of which go into the back of the decoder, which means we can be recording whilst watching, or recording two channels at once. The hard disc must be huge as we haven't ever got beyond 50% full, and we like to record music from BBC4 to playback through the stereo at any time so quite a few hours are stored there. We also record radio regularly, but that seems to take only a tiny bit of the disc.
It's great being able to record programmes from commercial TV as you can fast forward through the adverts.
Live TV can be paused as well, which is interesting......
Incidentally, the other two heads from the dish go into the bedrooms, so we can watch anything live like a sports match that goes beyond the bedtimes of our dogs (who dictate the time for their last walk of the day, then the walk up the wood stairs to Bedfordshire). Luckily they don't object to us watching TV in bed....

Hope this helps.

We have a Humax box as well and it is fine. Not sure where you could obtain one in France but I'm sure Richer Sounds or Amazon will send one. This link to Richer sounds:-

Good price at £169.00

We have a Humax Freesat, but without a recorder for which I'm now kicking myself! However one of our friends told me I can buy a hard drive that plugs in to the back of the Freesat box and then record on to that.

Maybe you could do something similar with your Sky box?

We took delivery of our new Humax 1000S 1tb freesat box yesterday and I now understand twointheeye's message about having a "dish with a four head receiver".  On the back of the Humax box there are two ports "sat 1" and "sat 2".  From these you need to be able to connect two cables which then connect to the LNB (low noise block downconverter) on the satellite dish in order to be able to watch and record different programmes at the same time.  We currently have an LNB with one cable so until we change to an LNB with dual port we cannot make use of the full range of options available from our Humax box.

Having said all that, we have already put it through its paces and it seems to have been a very good buy (from Amazon UK as Amazon France only had the remote for sale...)

It's not a problem to get the 4 head LNB & extra cable fitted. We had it done last year and it wasn't hugely expensive, but well worth doing. We just set all of our programmes to record now and can pick them up from the recent option on the menu, pause them, watch them again whenever we want. Also, if we're recording two programmes that clash timewise, we just watch one from the recorded menu until the others are finished. Good luck.
