Actually the referendum for deciding whether to stay or leave will be by 2017. If the vote is to leave, and I hope it will be, a period of a few years will pass whilst negotiations take place to facilitate an orderly exit. It won't happen overnight.

I don't think my worry is about how long it takes to happen, more about what will happen about our reciprocal health cover and of course any state pension increases.
Outside the EU, expats don't get cost of living increases and the pension rate remains exactly as it was when they left the UK.
If one know this before emigrating, then it is an individual's decision to go that way, but when people retire to another EU country thinking that the rules will remain in place and then (hopefully not) these are rescinded, then I think that's a very serious and unfair situation to be left in and therein lies my worry.

Why do you hope the UK will leave the EU Alpen?

I voted to join the then 'Common Market' back in 1975. For economic reasons it seemed worthwhile. However, no mention was made at the time of the destruction that would occur to Britain's fishing industry nor how it would evolve into the EU. The loss of sovereign control to Brussels over matters which should be decided by Parliament was not mentioned either. Many people across other European countries feel the EU has become to dominant and should be reduced to what it was in the beginning. The Common Market was originally set up by Germany and France for their benefit and that is still reflected in many policies in force today. The Common Agricultural policy is one. It subsidies uneconomic food production, allows Italy to export, as 'Virgin Olive Oil', ten times it's annual oil production and France to produce undrinkable wine that is expensively converted to industrial alcohol. France produces so much rubbish wine that the European Commission, two years ago, ordered France to remove 600,000 hectares of vineyards to combat this expensive waste. I don't suppose a start has been made yet.
The Common Market was a good, but flawed, concept. What it has evolved into, as the EU, is not good for Britain or many other member states. Drastic reform is required but I do not see that happening. Many of the newer members will oppose change as it is not in their interests. France and Germany, the two main players, will also endeavor to block reforms as well. The sooner Britain is out, and regains control of it's own economy and affairs, the better.

For a good explanation of what should now occur this article in the Daily Telegraph is worth a read.

I'm not qualified to speak on the economic issues, although I might be worried about UK membership if there was a queue of business people urging an exit. As for loss of sovereignty, I don't trust any government and like the back-up of European Courts of Justice and Human Rights as a check on administrative arrogance. Governments like to quote Parliament as their overseers, but with a majority they are really free to do what the heck they like. We ex-pats know this to our cost, surely. I'm willing to put up with Italian olive oil and French wine issues for that support while most MPs don't give a wotsit about unfashionable minorities such as us.
