The dreaded French horse fly

Post by edmoraz on Thu Aug 01, 2013 6:17 am

My friend has suffered this year from multiple horse fly bites, we are treating her with lotions etc but my question is how do you stop them biting you. I have tried all the insect repelants on the market and the 'skin so soft' from Avon even tried B6 as recommended by someone , still they bite. Any ideas please.

I don't know whether it as the damp start to the summer but they seem particularly prolific this year, and I have been bitten far more than usual, I have had to resort to antihistamines as I have had some nasty reactions, so I would be delighted to here of any preventative ideas.

I have hear that if you apply Lavender oil or Peppermint oil to a neckerchief & wear that, they won't attack you.
Can't speak for it's efficacy though! scratch

This is a recipe a friend sent me for using on my donkeys, but she also uses it and her husband sprays himself with it before going out on his bike.

Take one bunch of fresh rosemary, bruise slightly, pour over it a pint of boiling water cover, and leave overnight to steep.
Strain off the water and into that add 2/3 tablespoons of cider vinegar, 2 teaspoons of citronella, or even 3, 1 teaspoon of eucalyptus, 1 teaspoon of cedarwood, and then I add 2 teaspoons of lavender, just 'cos I love lavender (and it makes their coats shine).   Apart from the rosemary and vinegar, all the others are essential oils,  It is lovely to use, with no nasty chemicals in it.
