Ever wondered how much it costs to keep an animal? Just for interest only, here is a standard price list from a standard vet in France.

Animals are not cheap to keep! Veterinary bills are huge here at Phoenix, even with our favourable rates. But then, of course, we do have more animals than the average family

You're not wrong! An animal of any kind is, and should be, a big commitment both financially as well as emotionally.
When I was working out our budget for living over here by going through our expenses in the UK, it transpires that it costs about as much to feed and care for 4 large dogs with various health issues, as it does the two of us.

Our dog, a Newfoundland 65kg, was ill this summer and needed an operation. I was unsure whether to have it in France or UK (something about being able to really understand everything the English vet was telling me). We go a quote from both vets and the English one was more than twice the price. Then came the real shock - the French quote also included EVERY visit i.e. the two pre visits and the three after visits eahc of which the UK vet would have charged for. So, is it expensive. Yes, but then what isn't these days. BUT, it's definitely less than in the UK.

Our Newfie has had 3 big operations in the UK and thank goodness
for Pet Plan but even with the best cover we had to top up. It would
probably have cost half in France.

We pay far, far less in France than here in the UK and the vet we use over there is fantastic.

Her fees for the return to the UK are also tops.

I once came out of my UK vet with a bill for £41. The consultation lasted just 5 minutes. That's £495 per hour!

I have just picked up 30 tablets for my cat on a repeat prescription. That'll be 35 quid please.

Nice work if you can get it.

I guess we were lucky - so far vets fees here are roughly similar to what we used to pay in Scotland...

Useful information, Noodles.

Just for clarification purposes: the "animals" that Noodles is referring to are dogs. Vets' fees for cats are less and cats wouldn't like to be referred to as "animals" Laughing .

I also find the vets here more accommodating; for instance, we have a dog who gets 'hot spots' in the summer and I can go to the vet and get his tablets if it flares up without having to take him for a consultation. They also gave me a special rate for sterilising several cats (100€ each) and just under 100€ for coming to deal with an injured donkey's foot including call out fee, local anaesthetic and treatment. Definitely cheaper than the U.K.Very Happy

Vet's fees for our old horses have been much cheaper here also, as well as the farrier's.

Funnily enough we have just been checking out the two vets "local" to us so that we can register our two dogs; one is 26km away and the other 30kms. Their fees are 28 and 29.90 euros respectively for a consultation. The latter one charges 51.63 for an annual booster vaccination for one dog but this does include rabies as well. Their opening hours are 08h00-12h and 14h00 to 19h00. Both veterinary practices were extremely welcoming and seem to offer just what we want. Their opening hours and prices are both better than we had in the UK. Our only other experience has been last December, taking the dogs to the vets for their inspection and tapeworm treatment before going back to the UK. Let's hope the service we have experienced so far continues. K.
