We would like to get a supply to the barn across the road, which is where our principle garden is, but have been told that it's illegal to go stringing a cable over the road - can't imagine why Smile as we see them all over the place!  Anyone know what the law is?

I doubt you would be able to put anything high enough, without a great deal of trouble, so that it didn't interfere with tractors towing high loads (hay bales etc), high sided lorries, forestry lorries etc.

Regarding the law perhaps the EDF website will have something -

I think it will depend on the size of the road. Several of my neighbours have cables to barns at roof level.
I put mine underground, though it is just a single track road.
Go and see your Marie as you will need permission to block the road etc while doing the work.
Edf charge about €100 per meter plus the cost of the cable to put a cable underground I believe.

We have put a cable up from our house to the barn across the road. Permission was required from the Maire. Height of cable above the road was a minimum of 6 metres. Cable was attached to a steel rope. Application to receipt of permission was two weeks.

As easy as that!
Just proves it pays to ask at the Mairie first.
