how do I put accents on letters?
Is it just me - if I come to post something or, indeed, reply, I cannot seem to find how to put an accent on a letter.......is it something on the toolbar as I can see how to do "bold", "italic" "underscore" etc but how do I insert an accent above a letter? Please tell me I don't have to do it in Word and copy and paste it in................Thanks in ant. K.

If you're using a Windows machine, the following may help:
http://usefulshortcuts.com/alt-codes/accents-alt-codes.php
So, to print an é to screen, you'd hold down the ALT key, and type 0233 on your keypad (numlock must be on!), the release the ALT key. Lo, exciting things happen. Supposedly. Try it. If it works for you, it might be an idea to print that table out!
If you're using an Apple Mac - shout help again!

Or you could go here: http://www.avisoft.co.uk/ and choose yourself a free toolbar..................or even pay for one.
Re: how do I put accents on letters?
Very useful. Have downloaded the free version and am already using it in Outlook and word for Polish accents. Have had trouble downloading the Microsoft language pack on this laptop so was having to use "insert symbol" which was a pain.
Thanks

On my UK Dell you hit the function key and it activates extra double purpose keys... the number pad is set out in the normal pattern is doubled up on a block of letter keys. I have seen other laptops with a proper number pad again activated by the function key.BLAKEVINE wrote:Well I don't have a french keyboard and I can't find the num lock on my laptop and having downloaded the free thingy I can't get it to work so I guess it's back to cut and paste in word..............thanks. French keyboard without a French keyboard
If you have an English keyboard and use Google Translate you can click and use the virtual keyboard by typing in the first box set to French. Type your message and then cut and paste.BLAKEVINE wrote:Well I don't have a french keyboard and I can't find the num lock on my laptop and having downloaded the free thingy I can't get it to work so I guess it's back to cut and paste in word..............thanks. If you have a computer set to French with a French keyboard then you will not get the option But I guess you may have the English keyboard option with the first box set to English

Or try this (applies to Windows only):
Ctrl+Alt+e gives you é
Ctrl+Alt+a gives you á
For other accents you need to know the Alt codes e.g.:
Alt+0232 gives you é
But if your laptop doesn't have a numlock key do this:
Click the Windows Start button
Click Programs or All Programs
Click Accessories
Click System Tools
Click Character Map
Click on the character you want
Click Select, and then click Copy
Then in your document paste it in using Ctrl+v
