I thoroughly enjoy a robust debate and it's always more "entertaining" if there are people with opposing views. There are few things more boring than having a dinner party where everyone is of the same opinion......"Oh, I do so agree"......"You couldn't be more right" ........ "I was saying the same thing myself just the other day" and so on and so on. It is so much more interesting, enlivening and thought-provoking to swap ideas and verbally joust with someone who has alternative views. Having said that, I am not at my most patient when presented with intolerance, the irony of which does not escape me!
However, thanks to you both for setting up this section. I look forward to a lot of "alternative views".

Usually a sign of opportunism, if that's a word in English; people who blow with all winds, as we say in the lowlands, and it can be very windy there .tocyvi wrote:

A good friend of me used to say: "the only thing I do not tolerate is intolerance", which I like very much. Was it a quote by some well-known person?

Hi Myriam. I don't think it's a famous quote as such; it is, however, a lovely example of an oxymoron (a delightful word, which should be used more often).

Oxymoron is indeed a lovely word. But I think you're misusing it! See this:

Hi Tofu_Lover
Thanks for the post. In retrospect, I think you're right; perhaps paradox is better?
And there's nothing wrong with pedantry - vive the Pedant's Revolt

Hi T/L
Further to the subject of pedantry, have you, or anyone else, noticed the spelling on the explanations of the emoticons: embarrassed, pirat, affraid, bom, farao, rendeer, jocolor ?

Re: Discussion on the Social area
I may of course be wrong, but is not a Sticky a means of retaining information for future use/appraisal? In which case why is this one just another discussion page? I would like to suggest to the God's in charge that when Stickies are posted, they are locked and any further info that should be added to them should be directed to the Mods and it is they that will add them to the Sticky. This way there may be a chance that the Sticky remains informative and does not turn into just another discussion thread. Oh the irony

You are quite right... I hadn't expected my post to develop the way it has. I have now split the discussion and locked the sticky.. still learning how it all works.

I hadn't noticed, but I've had to look (of course) and you're absolootly rite. Presumably the PHP has been put together by someone without English as a first language. Or something.
On the hand, if you do a search for 'jocolor' (which I took to be a misspelling of 'jocular'), you find that the same icon - - is all over the place, and 'jocolor' is a contraction of 'joker, color'. So presumably some at least of the emoticon explanations here have simply not been expanded by whoever has compiled the board (Forumotion I mean, not our local heroes).
Whether said local heroes have the necessary permissions to make changes to the emoticon library (in the interests of pedantry, naturally) I know not, but I doubt it.

Re: Discussion on the Social area
I am not sure and stand to be corrected but it is sometimes a problem to use "protected" words that are used in coding and so a close proximity is used instead, it may not be the case but I have come across this sort of thing before and was given that as the reason
